Getting Started with vi

To Do This... Enter This in Command Mode...

Create or edit a file in a Korn shell window vi <filename>

Create or edit a file in a vi window viw <filename>

Make sure you're in command mode

{ESC}

Show if you are in command or insert mode

:set showmode

Find out what file you are in

{CTRL}g

Moving Within a File

Move the cursor left or right h or l or arrow keys

Move the cursor up or down k or j or arrow keys

Cursor to end of line

Cursor to beginning of line 0 (Zero) or ^
